Hikes Worth Doing in Oahu
As some of you may know, I have openly expressed my hatred for hiking in the past. However, it’s starting to grow on me. I’ve done a few that I actually really enjoyed and want to share with all of you. Without further ado here are my top 5 favorite hikes in Oahu.
5. Maili Pillbox aka “Pink Pillbox”
Maili Pillbox is on the west side of Oahu and is known for its bright pink bunker. This hike is about 1.5 miles and is pretty steep, so you’ll get a good work out. Once you reach the top of the ridge you’ll have a panoramic view of the ocean and mountains. This is probably the hardest hike on my list but the view is definitely worth it.
4. Ehukai Pillbox
This Pillbox is on North shore, across the beach from banzai pipeline and next to sunset beach elementary school. The hike is a little over two miles and gets very steep in certain areas. Most of it is shaded by the canopy of the trees, however, if it’s been raining the trail get very muddy. When you get to the top you’ll have an amazing view of the ocean!
3. Manoa Falls Trail
Of course I had to include a waterfall hike somewhere in here. Manoa Falls trail is in Honolulu and it’s probably the easiest hike on this list. The majority of the hike has very little elevation and it’s only 1.7 miles. The end of the trail has a waterfall with a small swimming pool to take a dip in. I loved this trail but there were two downsides, you had to pay and it was pretty crowded when I went.
2. Lanikai Pillbox
I’ve written about this hike before but it’s truly a great one, and even better when you go at sunrise. Located on the east side of the island is the Lanikai pillbox hike, a moderate, 1.8 mile hike. Once you reach the pillbox you’ll have an amazing view of Lanikai and the Mokes. There are very few hikes that I would do again but this is one of them.
1. Kamehame Ridge aka “Dead Man’s Catwalk”
Another amazing sunrise hike is Kamehame ridge, better known as “Dead Man’s Catwalk”. It got that nickname from a slab of cement that had the phrase spray painted on it, however, it’s now covered with fake grass. The trail is 1.5 miles and my favorite thing about it, is that it’s paved the whole way. When you reach the top you’ll have an amazing view of ocean on one side and mountains on the other.
