The Best Outdoor Activities in Wollongong

When most people think of Australia, they think of Sydney, Melbourne, or the Gold Coast. Although these are great spots, sometimes it’s worth checking out less popular places. I had the opportunity to live in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia for four months. Besides this being a transformative experience, since this was my first time living abroad, it gave me a chance to thoroughly explore the city. Although Wollongong is the third largest city in Australia, it still has a local feel and is much smaller than Sydney. Wollongong is just an hour and a half train ride from Sydney, making it a great day trip to get away from the hustle and bustle and explore fewer known parts of Australia.

Walk Through Wollongong Botanical Gardens

Located next to the University of Wollongong, the botanical gardens are a beautiful, calming oasis. The gardens span 67 acres and feature rose gardens, a rainforest collection, succulents, and much more to see. The entry is free, and from December- March you can even catch a movie on the lawn with Sunset Cinema.

Look Down from Mount Kiera

You can either drive or hike up to the Mount Kiera Lookout, which will leave you breathless as you look out at the view below. The lookout showcases a view of the whole city as well as the ocean. There are also a couple different walking tracks throughout the area to explore.

Stroll Along Blue Mile Pathway

Continental pool

This pathway is walkable and bikeable and is a simple and beautiful way to see the sights Wollongong has along the coast. Along this pathway are plenty of restaurants, a rock pool, and continental pool. And of course, the beach is right there if you want to stop for a swim. A good place for lunch or dinner along this pathway is The Boathouse in North Wollongong; fun fact, I actually used to work there!

Take in Views of Wollongong Lighthouse

Near the Wollongong fishing harbor is this historic lighthouse, which is a great spot to catch the sunset or take some pictures. Near the lighthouse there is also a great donut spot, Yachtie’s Cafe.

Check out the Crowne Street Market

Every time I went to the market I felt like a part of the community. The environment is so lively and fun. The market runs all the way down Crowne Street and is held every Thursday from 5-9 pm and Fridays from 8 am-3 pm. This is a great place if you’re looking for local produce, gifts, or a bite to eat.

Bike the NSW Coastal Cycleway

The cycleway is grand, stretching a total of 1,800 miles. I personally would not bike the whole thing, however the section that includes Wollongong is a reasonable 10 miles and runs from Wollongong to Thirroul. This is a paved, relaxing section and the sights will instantly put you in a serene state. Biking is a great way to see Wollongong and its surrounding parts in all its beauty, and you get in some exercise as well!
